Why I Don’t Recommend Very Low-Carb Diets for Women
Carbs have been demonized for years. Diet culture loves to tell us that cutting carbs is the fastest way to drop weight. But the truth is that for most women, going very low-carb can actually do more harm than good.
Here’s why…
Hormonal Health
Carbs help regulate thyroid hormones, estrogen, and keep cortisol in check. When intake is too low, women may see changes in their cycle, energy, and even fertility.
Metabolism and Energy
Women’s bodies are highly sensitive to energy restriction. Very low-carb diets can slow your metabolism and zap your energy, especially if you’re lifting, running, or doing high-intensity workouts.
Gut and Micronutrient Health
Carb-rich foods provide fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium. All of which are essential for digestion, detoxification, and overall health.
Mood and Mental Health
Carbs boost serotonin, which helps support a better mood, controls cravings, and contributes to more restful sleep. Too few carbs? Hello irritability and food obsession.
Sustainability
At the end of the day, restrictive diets are tough to stick to. A balanced, moderate carb intake is usually far more realistic (and enjoyable!).
Here's the Bottom Line…
Carbs are not the enemy. The right amount (especially when timed around your workouts) supports performance, hormonal balance, gut health, and longevity.
